1. What is Tectite stone?

Meteorite strikes produce Tectite stone, a natural glass. Meteors or asteroids collided with the earth millions, if not billions, of years ago. Rocks and sand were thrown into the air and evaporated as a result of the impact force and intense heat. Tectite was formed when these minerals solidified in the air and dropped to the earth.

Tectite rock is commonly referred to as meteorite in Vietnam. Some scientists have objected to the term “meteorite” since it refers to alien stuff. In this essay, we’ll use the term meteorite to refer to Tectite, as it’s often known.

3. Distribution of Tectite in the world.

Because of their origin from a meteorite impact, Tectite is only found in geographically limited areas. Scientists have divided 4 areas to find Tectite meteorites in the world. In each place, people have their own way of calling this meteorite.

  • Australia region: Australite (located in Australia), Indochinite (located in our Indochinese peninsula), Philippines (located in the Philippines). Tectite in this area is usually dark in color.
  • Ivory Coast region: Ivorite (located in Ivory Coast) is black.
  • North America: Bediasites (located in Texas) dark brown to black, Georgiaites (located in Georgia) have a yellowish-green color.
  • Central Europe: Moldavite stone (located in the Czech Republic) is green.

4. Tectite meteorite identification.

Because the stones are heated by high temperatures, heated friction, and evaporated, rough meteorites frequently have indentations on their surfaces. The rock’s veins are produced during the healing process and cemented in the atmosphere.

When cut, Tectite has a glossy surface. And when shining strong light through thin meteorites, we will see the light shine yellow-gray when passing through Tektite.

The dark tint of Tectite meteorite in Vietnam makes it easy to confuse it with Obsidian – Volcanic Glass. On the other hand, Tektite stones have a far lower water content than Obsidian rocks (1000 times less). As a result, when heated, Obsidian produces foam (from gas and water), but Tectite can only make a few light bubbles at the same temperature. This is a primary test to distinguish meteorites from volcanic glass.
