The tradition of giving Lucky Money is one of the most special and meaningful customs during Tết Nguyên Đán (Lunar New Year) in Vietnam and many other countries in East Asia, such as China, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Lì xì is not just a ritual of giving money; it is also a way for adults to express affection, convey good wishes, and send luck to younger people in the family, among friends, or with business partners.
The red envelope (a symbol of luck and prosperity) is traditionally used for lucky money. Red is also considered the color of good fortune in East Asian culture. The envelope may be designed simply or elaborately, often featuring decorative motifs that carry good wishes, such as the zodiac animal of the year, plum blossoms, peach blossoms, or auspicious phrases like “Phúc lộc thọ an khang” (Peace, Prosperity, Longevity, and Good Health).
